Lightning and hanging system implementation, a new technological and funcional infrastructure for the gallery

Ar/Ge Kunst, Bolzano’s kunstverein, was founded in 1985 on the premises of via Museo 29. The name Ar/Ge Kunst is an abbreviation of the German word Arbeitsgemeinschaft (working group), which was chosen to promote the idea of collective work, and also has the meaning to unsettle (coming from the German word arge).

In 2022 the new curators of Ar/ge Kunst Francesca Verga and Zasha Colah commissioned the exhibition design of the first year of exhibitions of the gallery to us, engaging a dialogue with the curatorial team and the board, our proposal, before designing any exhibition, was to design some of the key elements of the space as a kind of new technological and technical infrastructure

The implementation of the space started from the desire to comply with the sustainability of the actions taking place within the gallery and to create an exhibition design that would be malleable and useful for each of the exhibitions planned.

The exhibition "Lucia Marcucci, L'Offesa" was the opportunity for us to test the possibilities of the new installation system, through a light and delicate intervention that fits with a system of sky-earth elements that gave the possibility of displaying the artist's works in the center of the room.

The Kunstverein aims to reinforce the collective aspect inherent in the name Ar/ge Kunst as a research and production space for the arts, in which every new production forges a new working group of practitioners from different walks of life, to think through impending social, legal and artistic questions.

The installation is positioned as the central axis of Ar/Ge Kunst and runs the length of the space, just as the lighting system has done since the 1990s. A straight line that not only illuminates, but also supports, carries, mirrors, projects, amplifies, and helps in the actualisation of the individual projects.

THE SCORCHED EARTHLY. A SIT-IN OCCUPIES THE EXHIBITION ‘DIE FLIEGE IS A FLY IN VOLO, worskhop held th 4th April 2023

We updated that idea of a longitudinal object hanged to the ceiling with an aluminum structure that is drawn both for lightning and hanging, hiding the technical components in itself and merging visually with the surrounding.

The structure is made with industrial raw aluminum profiles, assembled together with elementary joints. Inspired by the mastery of Carlo Scarpa assemblages at Castelvecchio in Verona, we opted for clean shapes that have become very useful since the beginning for supporting every artwork or related device.

Screening held during the exhibition "and remember that holes can move" 14.09.2023 – 04.11.2023

Interest for this infrastructure came as well from an economical point of view. Considered as an investment from the production board and the curatorial team, the costs and materials for the exhibitions since then were drastically reduced. The simplicity and neatness of the structure allow to set up with very few elements scenographies that otherwise would require extra time.
