Design of eight trophies for the 2021 edition of the award organized by the Milan Chamber of Commerce for the most sustainable companies
The project we propose is the attempt to combine in a single artifact several elements in our opinion essential to imagine a sustainable future: recovery, reuse, lightness, diversity and research, themes always present in our projects. The eight copies of the award are part of a single series in which, however, each element has its own identity, they are unique works.
Marble is a metamorphic rock generated by the recrystallization of calcite and dolomite, limestone rocks, and by their transformation dictated by changes in temperature and pressure. The "parent" rocks of marbles, the carbonate sedimentary ones, are closely linked to living organisms with formation times of the order of a million years and imply interactions between very large tectonic plates.
The geological history of the marbles used to create this award has its roots in the Paleozoic, with the creation of the supercontinent Pangea, which originated from a series of collisions between plates, approximately 350 million years ago.
The compositional structure of the artifact is of a classic type: a marble base on which a sculptural metal element rests. The awards depart from the imaginary of the classic trophy by virtue of the relationship with the environment that surrounds them. The marble bases were made by recovering portions of slabs and blocks destined to become rubble, carefully selected, recovered and processed. The aerial part, on the other hand, is composed of an aluminum wind mechanism.
About 237 million years ago there was a relaxation phase which led the Eurasian and African plates to be topographically connected by the new oceanic crust, above which the marine intrusion gave rise to the Ligurian-Piedmontese Ocean, which allowed the connection with the Atlantic Ocean. The tropical environmental conditions and the new marine environment provided the context for the formation of the carbonate rocks that would later form part of the Alps and the Apennines.
There was then a reorganization in the movement of the tectonic plates, about 65 million years ago, which resulted in a reversal of the trend, in this case a rapprochement between the Eurasian plate and the African plate.
Part of the marble used for this trophy originates from the Apennines, a mountain range created about 20 million years ago. The rocks, in this case, are formed by the same type of Alpine tectonic process.
The purpose of these sensitive objects is to celebrate, through their movement and their diversity, the importance of recovering materials, the care and craftsmanship, the need for continuous research and the value of lightness. Eight small machines for the production of wonder.
The project was presented on Sunday 7 November 2021 at the Scala di Milano and delivered by the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Milan, Lodi Monza and Brianza to the winners of this edition entitled "sustainability and resilience".
